6
Publisher Podcast Hero of the Year 2025

Here are some of the industry's driving forces shaping publisher podcast strategies and inspiring others in podcasting.

Andrew Musgrove, Reach

Shortlisted
About
Andrew hosts, produces and edits The Everything is Black and White Podcast - whilst also providing a helping hand to the popular 1904 Club in Hull. Andrew continues to grow the Everything is Black and White Podcast to huge numbers - and is the face of the podcast as well as the man behind the camera. Producing and hosting five of the six episodes that are released every week, Andrew is crucial to the podcast's output as well as maintaining that important element of quality. He has become well known among Newcastle fans for his sometimes wild predictions and opinions - that often turn out right (he was one of the few who voiced his view NUFC were getting to Wembley the semi-final draw was even made) Andrew has in the last year focused on growing the YouTube Channel - through engaging pieces to camera and getting onto the street to talk to fans.

About
As a bearded woman destigmatizing all things sex and body image, Bethany 's very presence reflects her determination to help others feel confident and liberated to be themselves. For 6 years, Bethany has been elevating voices from across the globe focusing on gender-diverse realities and inspiring LGBTQ+ communities across cultures. As a producer, she's worked with over 170 guests to promote their voices and transform the portrayal of women and gender in media leading her to self-fund trips to five continents gathering interviews and documenting stories that far too often get silenced, shame or banished from mainstream media. At the heart of The Sassy Show is Bethany's unwavering determination to provide society with fresh, realistic and liberated examples of the human experience.

Daniel J McLaughlin, Reach Plc

Shortlisted
About
Daniel J McLaughlin is undoubtedly the most passionate journalist I’ve come across about podcasting and audio in my 20 years in the industry. As Podcast Editor for Reach and its Reach Studio project, Dan oversees the commissioning, production, and publication of the audio output for the regional and national newsrooms that are part of the publisher’s portfolio. Podcasts Dan’s worked on have been recognised for their excellence within the media industry, with praise and accolades from the Publisher Podcast Awards, the Global Media Awards, the Press Gazette (Coronavirus Journalism Excellence) and more. And he’s contributed to a hugely diverse range of podcasts on different subjects, like Pod Save the King; Testimony - A True Crime podcast; The North in Numbers; The Pride of Britain podcast; The Trial of Santa Claus; and Christmas on a Budget. Dan presents and produces Reach’s LGBTQ podcast, The Out Crowd, as well as being on the committee for ReachOut, the LGBTQ inclusion network at the company. He’s also using his experience in the journalism industry in the education sector, working as a guest lecturer at the University of Salford on modules including Podcasting.

Joshua Sommer, Reuters

Shortlisted
About
Joshua was employed by the team at Reuters in the testing stage of the company's Reuters World News podcast, with little or no experience of current affairs production and podcasting sound design. From the very first moment Joshua joined the team he has been an inspiration with his creativity and ability to adapt sounds for our podcasts. Joshua writes and creates much of the music that is used on the podcast, layering sounds from reporters around the world alongside music and sound fx that enrich the storytelling of our podcast. I have never worked with anyone as skilled as Joshua in the art of sound production - and for this podcast he is critical to its success and development. He is technically skilled but also adapatable to ideas and feedback from the journalist team - as he enjoyed a learning journey alongside the rest of the team involved. He also helped train and guide journalists around the world, so that they can record for the podcast (using virtual studios, iphones, mics etc). Without Joshua it would not have been possible to launch Reuters World News to a global audience.

Louisa Wells, The Telegraph

Shortlisted
About
Louisa Wells is the glue that holds together the hugely successful podcast team at The Telegraph together, and in particular over the past year has overseen massive developments in the audio department and an enormous amount of growth across various shows. Louisa has the unenviable task of being across everything from two daily news shows covering British politics and Ukraine war updates to several magazine format shows that stretch across comment, sport, money and foreign affairs, plus a roster of limited investigative series. She does a fantastic job of supporting several different teams with very different demands, and always with good humour. Under her watch, The Telegraph has launched a brand new daily news show, The Daily T, which has successfully entered a very crowded market.

Maxine Betteridge-Moes, New Internationalist

Shortlisted
About
Maxine deserves recognition for her hard work and diligence in getting our newly-launched podcast, The World Unspun, off the ground with limited budget and editorial capacity. We are a small independent magazine, totally worked off our feet, and Maxine has gone above and beyond in exploring new avenues for digital products including but not limited to the podcast. Not only was she the driving force behind taking this new direction, but she quite simply does it all (with light assistance from myself) - overseeing logistics, liaising with freelance audio editors, researching & sourcing interview guests, recording and hosting, production, publishing and promotion. The team shows our appreciation, of course, but I believe she deserves the title of Podcast Hero.
